Registered Apprenticeship: Supporting Michigan's workers and employers
Registered Apprenticeship is a recognized training model supported by the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity through Workforce Development’s State Apprenticeship Expansion (SAE) office. SAE supports and promotes the use of Registered Apprenticeship to support our state’s workers and employers. The training model benefits workers by combining job related, classroom-based learning with paid on-the-job training in high-skill, high-wage, in-demand industry occupations. This strategic approach also helps employers by creating a pipeline of professional workers through work-based learning. Registered Apprenticeship benefits workers, employers and our state’s economy.
What is Registered Apprenticeship?
Registered Apprenticeship is an employee training program that combines on-the-job training and classroom instruction under the supervision of an experienced industry professional who serves as a mentor. It is a proven strategy for recruiting, training, and retaining employees — perfect for filling the talent pipeline with highly-skilled, diverse, and productive workers. Businesses of all sizes engage registered apprentices.
Each Registered Apprenticeship program is customized to meet the specific needs of the employer. While on-the-job training occurs in the workplace, classroom settings include secondary or post-secondary institutions, employers’ worksites, union-sponsored institutions, community colleges, and online education.
Upon completion of a Registered Apprenticeship program, participants receive a nationally-recognized industry credential and the employer gains a well-qualified worker with skills specific to their industry.
